Everyone in life will probably or most likely encounter a difficult situation that they will have to get over. Whether it’s with a difficult relationship, someone in your family, or even a friend of yours. Both S.E Hinton in her story of the ” Outsiders ” and ” Praying ” by Kesha shows internal and external conflict. Similarly, they show this by how difficult it is to get over their pain. In “Praying” Kesha has to deal with a past relationship and has to try and conquer her pain. In the “Outsiders” Ponyboy has to deal with the relationship with his older brother Darry.
A common theme between the Outsiders and the song Praying is, overcoming pain from past or present things will make you more of a stronger person. In the Outsiders, it talks about how Ponyboy has to deal with Darry his older brother or Guardian. Ponyboy thinks that Darry is too harsh to him because of how he only yells at him and not his other brother Sodapop. This means that Ponyboy is dealing with one person conflict. Which is similar to the song Praying because of how Kesha is only dealing with one person at the moment. In the song she says, ” I hope you are somewhere praying” so someone had to do something very wrong for her to be dealing with this internal conflict.
Therefore both texts show similar conflicts with negative relationships. But there are differences in the theme from the two stories. In the Outsiders there is a conflict that could be described as person vs. Society because Jerry witnesses the bravery of Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally during the church fire and he is shocked when Ponyboy tells him that they are Greasers which is referring to a “Hood”. In the book the local paper the headline read ” Juvenile delinquents Turn Heroes” Which is what society thinks of the greasers. In contrast, in the song “Praying” Kesha wants other people to stay strong when dealing with a difficult time like she did. In her song she says, ” I can thank you for how strong that I have become” and ” I had to learn how to fight for myself, cause I can make it on my own.” This shows that she is moving on from a difficult time and is thriving with perseverance.
Now, in both the Outsiders and “Praying” S.E Hinton and Kesha talk about their pain and how they got the strength to get over it. After reading the Outsiders and listening to “Praying” we can or readers can say that each person has to deal with conflicts in their life, either by handling it by keeping it all bottled up inside, or forgive and overcome the pain inside.
